The Biologics Automation and High-throughput Technologies Group in San Diego is searching for an experienced Automation Engineer leader to support multiple scientific research teams involved in early-stage discovery and screening of protein therapeutics. Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that common automation equipment is accurately maintained and in good working order. This includes stand-alone liquid handlers (BioMek, Lynx, Echo), plate readers (SpectraMax, Envision, Neo2) plate washers/dispensers, protein quantification instruments (Octet), colony/plaque pickers (Qpix), sequencing instruments etc., as well as several fully integrated robotic systems.

  • Supervise a group of automation engineers whose responsibilities at present include automation equipment installation, maintenance, qualification, writing operational scripts and modifying scheduling software, and aiding non-automation scientists across the site.

  • Work collaboratively with protein discovery, engineering, and expression groups at the San Diego site to optimize research efficiencies through implementation of novel automation process improvements and technologies.

  • Work with external automation providers and internal colleagues to implement and validate novel systems and/or technologies, particularly in the area of Agentic labs.

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of automation engineer-specific experience (at least 3 years after post-doctoral education), or

  • M.S. in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of automation engineer-specific experience, or

  • B.S. in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related discipline with a minimum of 15 years of automation engineer-specific experience

  • Experience should include at least 10 years of relevant industry experience, in a well-equipped automation lab preferably in a pharmaceutical company or an automation provider.

Other preferred key attributes and skills

  • Extensive expertise in the scheduling, operation, training and troubleshooting of fully integrated robotic liquid-handling systems and stand-alone systems.

  • Programming experience using Python, C# or VB.NET is a plus.

  • Expertise with BioSero’s Green Button Go, SAMI, Cellario or other scheduling software.

  • Proficient in statistical analysis tools such as JMP, SAS, and Business Intelligence and Visualization tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, Spotfire etc.

  • Experience in applying Bayesian algorithms and DOE approaches to optimize experimental processes on automated workstations in a closed-loop environment is strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience in the direct supervision of automation engineers in an industrial setting.

  • A thorough familiarity with state-of-the-art laboratory automation technologies, equipment, and best practices. Demonstrated ability to set and enable a strategic vision for the group.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to work with other automation engineers, as well as non-automation scientists. Experience in influencing and educating other scientists and engineers to use automation technologies to improve and accelerate workflows.

  • Excellent organizational skills, as exemplified by an interest in clear record-keeping, and data analysis, and ability to prioritize work across multiple projects.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

$156,750 - $229,900

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
